Decision Intelligence: Turning Sustainability Goals into Measurable Results

Sustainability has become a boardroom priority. Organizations across industries have established ambitious environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, committed to reducing emissions, and increased investments in sustainability initiatives. According to an InterSystems survey of 450 supply chain professionals, one of the greatest barriers to ESG progress is a lack of real-time supply chain visibility. Another major challenge is inconsistent reporting from suppliers and trading partners. Without timely, trusted data, organizations often rely on historical information that may no longer reflect current operating conditions. 

This creates a critical disconnect. Sustainability objectives are typically measured at an enterprise level, but success depends on operational decisions being made every day throughout the supply chain. When data is fragmented across systems, partners, and geographies, organizations struggle to identify risks, evaluate tradeoffs, and make informed decisions quickly enough to influence outcomes. 

From Reporting to Action

Traditionally, many sustainability programs have focused on reporting what happened. Decision intelligence shifts the emphasis toward influencing what happens next.

By combining real-time operational data with predictive analytics and AI-driven recommendations, organizations can anticipate issues before they become problems. Decision-makers gain the ability to evaluate potential outcomes, compare scenarios, and choose the path that best balances sustainability objectives with operational performance. 

For example, a transportation manager evaluating shipment options might not only see cost and delivery implications but also understand the carbon impact of each alternative. A supply chain planner could assess whether changing suppliers improves resilience while maintaining sustainability targets. These decisions become faster, more consistent, and more aligned with corporate ESG goals. 

The goal is not to replace human decision-makers. Instead, decision intelligence augments them with context, recommendations, and scenario analysis, allowing them to make smarter choices with greater confidence. 

Why Data Matters

Decision intelligence is only as effective as the data that supports it.

Many organizations continue to struggle with fragmented systems, disconnected business processes, and inconsistent data quality. Supply chain, operational, customer, and partner information often reside in separate platforms, making it difficult to create a complete and trusted view of the business. 

To overcome this challenge, organizations need an architecture that can unify, harmonize, and make data available in real time. This foundation allows data from internal systems, external partners, IoT devices, and third-party sources to be connected and transformed into actionable intelligence. 

When organizations establish this foundation, they create the conditions necessary not only for better sustainability outcomes, but also for stronger overall business performance.

Sustainability is no longer simply a compliance exercise. Customers, investors, regulators, and partners increasingly expect organizations to demonstrate measurable progress toward sustainability goals.

Companies that can connect sustainability objectives directly to operational execution are better positioned to reduce risk, improve efficiency, strengthen resilience, and build trust with stakeholders. Decision intelligence provides the framework for making that connection. 

As business conditions become more complex and supply chains continue to face disruption, the organizations that thrive will be those that can consistently make better decisions, faster.
